2012 Update

So after a time away looking at other potential websites I have decided to stay with the current WordPress blog.   I will continue to develop this resource for students to use during the school year in our Wellness classes.   I will also be adding an online exercise and food log for students to use on an optional basis.

News and Update

Well we just started our badminton unit which is one of our favorites at Mahoney.  This unit will last about 3 weeks and end with a written test so we can access their knowledge of the game and rules.  This is one of our life long activities that students can continue participating in once they are adults.

We have also started our “Fitness Fridays” in which when a class meets on that day we set up fitness activities that students can choose to participate in as well as switch from one to other as well.  Our goal with these days is to expose the students to the many different fitness activities that they can take part in and enjoy as well.  Any fitness activity must be fun for any individual to enjoy exercise and continue with the required consistency.

Please make sure you drop by this Thursday and next Monday during the parent-teacher conferences if you would like to speak with us.

Update and New Unit

We have started an indoor unit now and will be inside until April unless we get hit with a heat wave.  Our new unit is “Team Handball” which I did get the chance to watch this fast moving game during the summer olympics.  This is our 6th year of team handball at Mahoney.  The students really enjoy the fast moving pace of the game and the ability to try out many of the different positions. 

We have also started introducing the students to our new strength training equipment that was donated to us by one of the Portland area health clubs.  The equipment is a set of 9 machines which cover the entire body.  They are smaller in design(for women)so they are perfect for students here at Mahoney to use.  We will be using them with our “Fitness Friday’s” and at some point after school once we can find someone to supervise the weight room.

Update 9-29

With the weather forcing us inside last Friday we did work on completing the remainder of fitness assessments that we need to finish up.  We also hope to get in a few more classes this week with our current units before we introduce a new unit.

I am also working on developing a new 7th grade project that would have students using their new laptops.  More on that in the next few weeks. 

A few reminders:

- Students need to change up for class or will be required to make up the time after school

- Any student participating in sports at Mahoney is required to fully participate in phys ed class

- Sneakers must be tied correctly for class

Current Units

We have now started two new units with our classes.  For the 6th grade classes – Ultimate Frisbee and for the 7th and 8th grade classes – Lacrosse.  Our units usually last about 2 weeks in duration.  If rain forces us inside we will work on finishing up our fitness assessments.  We have completed the mile and now need to complete testing for agility, muscular strength, muscular endurance, and flexibility.

Wellness Web Sites

Here are links for two great sites that are very complete and focus on the whole child in terms of wellness.  We are in the process of looking for an online exercise log that our students can use to track their day to day physical activity.  From there we will start some extra credit projects for the 7th and 8th grade students with their laptops.

Week of 9-15 Update

We started our fall baseline fitness testing on Friday with the mile run.  We will continue with the remainder of classes on Monday the 15th.  We will then review the times and see if they fall at  the 50th percentile which is the chart that we use.  On rain days we will finish up with the other assessments that are part of the program. 

We will then start up some team activities for the next 2 weeks following the the mile run for time.  Please realize that we are stressing to students that the priority is that every student give their best effort. It isn’t about how fast their time is but more about progression and improving along the way.

Parents and students can also check on this site to see the scores for the 50th and 85th requirements.

Phys Ed Contracts

This week we have been discussing the requirements and expectations for class.  Also we have passed out the student contract that needs to be signed by both student and parent – then brought back to school.  Taking the time to read the contract over we are all on the same page with what is expected from all students.

We will be putting a copy of the contract on this website as well so people can review it when needed.

The New School Year

Well the start of the 2008-2009 school year is just around the corner.  It was a quick but very enjoyable summer.  Over the next week I’ll be posting and updating the site often as we start the year.  There will be some new changes and some review as well of what our class is about, specific requirements for the class, and other important news and/or announcements to share with all.

We look forward to another year of health and wellness for all Mahoney students.

The Final Few Weeks of Classes

The idea of June is hard to believe at this point.  The year has flown by so fast.  Some items that are important:

1.  Fitness Scores for the 6th and 7th grades will go home with report cards.

2. The 8th grades will be completing a written assessment along with posting their fitness scores.  This assessment will also be sent home.

3. Lockers must be cleaned out prior to the end of school.  We start cleaning them out on the final day and any clothing or shoes left behind are sent to Goodwill.

4.  We are thinking about maybe holding a 2 mile fun run for Mahoney which would be optional.  If there are any parents who would like to help out with this event please let us know.  Thanks.
